Belize Opportunity BWRC Mission: To support wildlife conservation, animal health and welfare, and the veterinary profession in Belize through medical services, education, research and collaboration. Position Title: Small Animal Veterinarian Position description: The small animal veterinarian at BWRC provides excellent quality medical care to BWRCs domestic clients; presents a professional and caring attitude towards clients; abides by BWRCs veterinary care SOPs and guidelines; and enacts BWRCs core values through commitment to quality and social responsibility. BWRC is a wildlife, domestic and teaching clinic. The small animal veterinarians primary focus is on domestic patients, but will also be involved with wildlife and teaching. The small animal veterinarian is responsible for delivering front-line domestic medical services and consultation to the general public. The successful candidate will be comfortable working within the unique local context, with a diverse international team, and with diverse clientele. The candidate will possess good communication skills. The candidate will maintain candor and professionalism in communication with BWRC staff, interns, Directors, clientele and the general public. The small animal vet will provide supervision and mentorship to interns and students. Belize and CARICOM nationals are given preference for this position. In the case that a national candidate is identified for this position, trial periods and remuneration will be negotiated based on the candidates circumstances. Foreign nationals must perform a one month trial period. After the first month, upon mutual agreement, BWRC will initiate the 1 year work permit application process. The candidate will be responsible for all fees associated with obtaining a Belize Work Permit. During the trial period, and as long as the work permit is pending, the candidate will be responsible for fees associated with maintaining a current visa status. Qualifications: Doctor of Veterinary Medicine with 5 years (preferred) small animal clinical experience. Candidates must be competent performing a range of surgeries. The ideal candidate will have excellent organizational and administrative skills, and an excellent customer service and business development outlook. Candidates must be registered by or register with (for international candidates) the Veterinary Surgeons Board of Belize. International candidates will have significant international travel, work, or study experience. Excellent spoken and written English is required; functional Spanish is an asset. Schedule: BWRC Small Animal Veterinarian hours are flexible as determined by BWRCs manager. The clinic manager will liaise with the veterinarian to schedule patients. The small animal veterinarian is on call 24/7 to respond to emergencies. Veterinarian may also conduct or be involved in house visits; field visits, overnight stays, and weekend spay and neuter clinics. Small Animal Veterinarian Responsibilities a) Provide high quality medical services to BWRCs clientele b) Open and close clinic in cooperation with administrative assistant c) Maintain all supplies and instruments as well as inventory in cooperation with the clinic manager d) Answer phone and respond to general inquiries and walk-ins Belize Wildlife and Referral Clinic Small Animal Veterinarian Responsibilities relating to Clinical Duties a) Perform intake exams and client consultation b) Perform a range of basic surgeries and assist and learn more specialized procedures c) Become familiar with and operate and maintain diagnostic lab equipment d) Troubleshoot equipment and liaise with manager to order maintenance and repairs as necessary e) Further develop diagnostic services f) Provide assistance in spay and neuter clinics in local communities g) Keep accurate records according to clinic protocols and procedures h) Perform procedures and operations according to BWRC protocol and standards i) Maintain a professional and organized environment and continuously develop protocols and procedures for BWRC j) Provide recommendations for the further development of BWRCs domestic small animal services k) Contribute to and advance development of BWRCs domestic services client base Transportation: The candidate must maintain a working vehicle to ensure house visits and daily transportation are efficient. Private transportation expenses outside the regular commute will be subject to GOB standard reimbursement (currently $1.50BZ per mile). Additional Requirements: Candidates must be committed to participating in and fostering close team work and must be able to demonstrate good communication skills and the ability to work with a wide variety of people. The ideal candidate will have a high degree of personal flexibility and improvisation skills; candor and composure under pressure; and the ability to function well in a team setting under stressful conditions. Furthermore, international candidates must be willing to live and work in Belize in a very different local context. Climate and Comfort: Please note Belize is a less developed country with a tropical environment. International candidates are advised to thoroughly research Belize before considering this position. Special considerations may include a candidate’s willingness to adapt to a disparate socio-economic context and decreased standard of living and comfort. Examples include aggravated heat and humidity, sub-standard roads, utility interruptions, and fewer consumer options.
