Bell Tower: A short story -- Jadanna stopped to peer at the burning letters etched into the brick floor. Boss ahead, they read. She had seen these words before. A few steps forward, there was another message, fiery and foreboding. Imminent boss. With curiosity unwavering, she pulled herself up the rusted rungs of a nearby ladder, and as her eyes rose above the next floor, she saw mere inches from her eyes a message much more forceful than the last. Imminent death. Pulling herself to her feet, Jadanna found herself faced with a doorway shrouded in white fog. Taking a small step forward, she slowly exhaled and gripped her broadsword tightly. Another step. She had fought countless monsters already; what on the other side could be so insurmountable? Another step. She was prepared. Another step, more tentative than the last. She found herself glancing back at the glowing letters. Imminent death. She clenched her teeth together and, with a furrowed brow, turned back to the doorway and slowly stepped through the thick fog. On the other side of the door was a breathtaking sight. A gently sloping church roof overlooking a dazzling landscape, gently illuminated by a setting sun. A majestically climbing bell tower. A fifteen foot-tall, snarling, poleaxe-wielding armored gargoyle. Jadanna simply hung her head and muttered Bollocks as several tons of blunt force came crashing down upon her head and the unforgettably damning words she had heard so many times before echoed deep within her downtrodden soul. YOU DIED. The End
