Belle Plaine Herald 30, 60 & 90 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK: (1983) The Belle Plaine town baseball team split two games, losing to Shakopee 7-6 and defeating Chanhassen 12-2. In the latter game, Ken Solheid was the winning pitcher and Eric Johnson and Jon Schuette both clubbed home runs. (1953) George Bodmer, the right-hander who pitched Belle Plaine to runner-up at the state tournament the previous year, was home on a weekend pass from Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., and gave another great demonstration of his pitching abilities as he shutout the Jordan Brewers 9-0. The Tiger victory moved Belle Plaine into first place in the league standings. The Cardinals and Braves were more than convinced that Pete Johnson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Johnson, had what it takes to play pro ball. Both teams offered the Tiger shortstop $4,000, the highest bonus that could be paid by a major league club to a rookie entering a farm system to sign their contract. The Giants and Dodgers were also interested in the Belle Plaine youth. While deliberating which organization to join, Pete finished out the season with Belle Plaine. (1923) The Belle Plaine ball team lost to New Prague at the latter place 3-0.
