Below Article Beware Police Depts: I want to clarify this article. Im not saying that civilian dog trainers cant train a good PWD (Police Work Dog. Over the last 23 years Ive secured many good dogs from civilian trainers/kennels and learned a lot from working with some civilian trainers. What I am saying is this....it is my opinion that an experienced K-9 handler (or retired) should be involved in the training of a new K-9 team. New handlers have questions that only an experienced K-9 Officer can answer. Examples: Deployment decisions, common problems with first deployment, crowd control misconceptions, domestic situations, adapting team training to individual environment , case law, incident report articulation, importance of record keeping, dealing with frivolous law suits, decision making responsibilities, training fellow co-workers, community demonstration protocol, off duty responsibilities and filtering call out incidents. This sharing of knowledge from the experienced to the new is vital to the success of the new team.
