Below is a note I wrote to Jim Harbaugh was still at Stanford 4 or so years ago....I am glad he finally listened...lol... From: McGraw, Tim Sent: Thursday, December 09, 2010 7:21 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Accounting 271--Michigan Business School Jim: First of all, I want to congratulate you on an excellent season. You have made all of us in Ann Arbor very proud. You will not remember me, I’m sure, but I was one of the Teaching Assistants for your Accounting 271 course in 1985-6. Ed Kenevan was the Teaching Assistant that handled your recitation class, but I worked with him and subbed for his class a couple of times. In any event, I recall you did pretty well in the class, which was considered a weed-out class for the B School. Ed Kenevan and I were CPAs, and were in the Michigan Law School paying our tuition by teaching, both graduating in 1986. In fact, we flew back early from the wining and dining by law firms in Chicago so that we could attend the Ohio State game on November 23, 1985. It was worth cancelling our reservations at The Palm on Saturday night to see that game. You and Kolesar were fantastic. Thanks for the memories. As Jackie Gleason used to say, “the world is your oyster” right about now. I know you are focusing on the Orange Bowl, and I’m confident that Stanford will not have any problem with Virginia Tech. Good Luck. I know you have a number of opportunities available to you, and I am confident that you will succeed in whatever you decide to do. After all, you are the consummate Michigan man. Which is the reason I am writing. Pardon the vernacular, but, Dude, you have the chance to be immortalized in Ann Arbor....like Bo on steroids!! You could be coaching here for the next 20 + years. Michigan could be restored to one of the best programs in the country again....with integrity, hard work, and success in both the classroom and the football field being the centerpiece of the program again. And with your legacy at quarterback, we could be developing more Tom Brady’s, Elvis Grbac’s, Brian Griese’s, Todd Collin’s, John Navarre’s, Chad Henne’s, and the list goes on. You were the one that broke the ice and established Michigan as Quarterback U, at least in my assessment. You were the first quarterback from Michigan to really succeed at the professional level. Congrats, and thanks. I know Stanford is a great academic school (it should be for $40,000-$50,000 a year) and you have reinvigorated the football program. I know the professional teams will be wooing you. But, can you imagine the books that will be written about you if you were to return to Ann Arbor to restore the luster of this great program? We should have hired Les Miles 3 years ago...he would have succeeded here I’m sure. But maybe that botched opportunity is a blessing in disguise..... You cant go wrong with any of the opportunities that are available to you, and of course, you have to do what’s best for your family. And California is a much nicer climate than Ann Arbor, at least in the Winter.....but, God Dammit, we NEED you!!! And David Brandon is a good businessman and Michigan man....the 2 of you could top the Canham/Schembechler combination. Can you imagine? Well, I am done groveling. But, if you ever need anyone to help with the legal and tax aspects of your employment agreement (where ever that may be), that is one of my specialties here in Ann Arbor, and I would be willing to donate my services for the Cause.
