Below is a post courtesy of Elgin City Website Slack City crash to an opening league defeat Posted on August 11, 2013 by Stuart Crowther — Albion v Elgin City’s league campaign started with a defeat on what was a frustrating day for manager Ross Jack and his players. Both sides ended up with a man sent off in a game that neither side can say they ever had control of – but in the end it was Albion Rovers who took the points thanks to slack home defending. Elgin found themselves two goals behind early in the second half, the second the result of a penalty kick that should easily have been avoided. A late rally and strike from Craig Gunn proved to be too little and too late for Ross Jack’s men, who now face a tough trip to an East Stirlingshire side on a high after an opening day away win at Hampden. There was an early warning for Elgin when McMullan was forced to clear from his own line after Dunlop was allowed to rise unchallenged for a corner kick. Minutes later and a similar situation saw Walker in acres of space, the Albion man must have thought he had done enough to open the scoring only for goalkeeper Jellema to scoop the ball off his line. At the other end Neil Parry blocked the only real City effort, a Beveridge effort that lacked real power. However, while City appeared to have overcome their early nerves and were in control, it was Albion who opened the scoring with a simple striker three minutes from the break. Crawford was allowed time and space on the left wing to swing in a cross that located Walker completely unmarked six yards from goal – his clipped header left Jellema with no chance. Ten minutes into the second half and with Elgin pressing for an equaliser for the second successive week they shot themselves in the foot by conceding a weak second. Cameron got himself involved in a tussle for the ball on the bye-line with Walker – as the latter rose with the ball, the City man stuck out a leg and brought him down. Walker took the kick himself and made no mistake, sending Jellema the wrong way. There was brief hope for Elgin fans when Gunn was charging towards goal but brought crashing to the turf by goalkeeper Parry – a red card for the Albion man but no joy from the resulting weak free kick right on the 18-yard line. City were then reduced to ten themselves when replacement goalkeeper McGinlay had a taste of Sean Crighton’s boot. A yellow card for the City man – but for the second time as he had earlier (and wrongly) complained about the Albion penalty decision. Minutes from the final whistle the Albion defence failed to clear a City corner, allowing Craig Gunn at the back post the time to control, take a step inside and crash the ball high into the net. Elgin had one final opportunity to snatch a draw, but a free kick from 20 yards out was sent high over the bar and the points were heading south.
