Below is the letter LWVC President Jennifer Waggoner wrote to Representative Nancy Pelosi on Friday: -- Dear Representative Pelosi— I am writing you as a constituent and as President of the League of Women Voters of California. I am writing with great passion because these issues directly impact my life on a day-to-day basis. Legislation on comprehensive #immigration reform must: •Provide a path to citizenship for undocumented persons; •Promote reunification of families; •Meet economic business and employment needs of the U.S.; •Improve safeguards against illegal immigration; •Provide due process for all persons including the right to a fair hearing. In order to become #citizens, immigrants must learn about our system of government, understand the rights and responsibilities of citizenship and swear allegiance to the United States of America. These are fundamental steps to integration in American society, and it is in the interests of current citizens, immigrants and future generations that we build one nation. Civic life is at the core of how we get along as a community and far too many of our family members, neighbors, coworkers and friends are unable to participate because of their citizenship. Your attention to this issue is very important to me and to my organization. I encourage your constituents to take action today to express their views to you on immigration reform: lwv.org/blog/take-action-immigration-debate-heads-us-house
