Below is the single biggest problem with Farmers Markets in general in my opinion. While we support organisations such our own Partner Farm Program that volunteer and provide full disclosure without prompting, all of the products that we sell are produced right here in SI with the exception of a very few manufactured items that compliment our or our our partner products (IE The Tea Balls and Tea Spoons) or other multi farm CSAs and Co-ops that source their products regionally in SI. What we do not support and fight against are the resellers that buy wholesale and then tell the big whopper of how hard they worked to produce those products of Brazil, Mexico, and California fraudulently selling those products to market visitors who believe their purchases are supporting local agriculture and the local and regional economy. I really hope the below section of the new law has some teeth and is enforced with an iron fist to turn these established resellers into honest brokers. It will level the playing field between REAL SI Regional producers and the sham frauds that for so long have been a wart on the hind quarters of many farmers markets. Still a shame meat, eggs, and dairy were excluded from this law, infact one might say it is pathetic that meat and eggs were exempted from this law. Of course if this is a toothless law with no enforcement then it is nothing more than another piece of legislative mental masturbation. •“Re-sellers” are a perennial issue with farmers markets, individuals who buy produce from a wholesale market and then show up at a farmers market pretending to be actual farmers. HB5657 would require farmers market vendors that sell produce to have a small sign, label or packing slip that said where their produce was grown and if they can’t disclose that they must list where the produce was purchased from. This only applies to specialty crops i.e. not meats, eggs, dairy or value-added products.
