Ben Bruno · Trap Bar Squats. One great thing about the trap bar is that it allows for a great variance in technique based upon one’s goals and body structure. Typically you’ll see people utilize a more hip-dominant deadlift pattern and start each rep from the floor. That’s perfectly fine and I like that exercise, but you can also utilize the trap bar for a more knee-dominant squat pattern utilizing a more upright torso that closely mimics the joint mechanics of a front squat, as demonstrated here by my client Ryan. I’ve been using this variation a lot more recently with my clients and really like it as a way to train the squat pattern and work the quads without the need for axial loading. I also prefer starting the set from the top position with the bar in the rack (again, similar to squatting) because I find that for most people, the first rep is always the ugliest when they first try to break the bar off the floor, and starting from the top position eliminates that ugly first rep. Also, instead of resetting the bar on the floor after each rep, I prefer to lightly tap the floor or stop just short of the floor to keep constant tension on the legs. Great variation! https://youtube/watch?v=CHFWSzQpdpA
