Ben Hall lost his bid to unseat incumbent mayor Parker in Houston. The 3rd African American to do so. While I hear that people questioned Halls integrity there is a much larger picture here. The important decisions of my hometown have always been made by people west of downtown. Thats where the old money is. Many on the west side of town has never traveled to the east side of the central business district because they dont have to. While Houston is diversified its not inclusive. While many say you shouldnt vote for your race just because they are of your race I ask them to read Henry Louis Gates Many Rivers to Cross. It depicts the many rivers and hurdles the African American has faced in America. It brings you to our times. We have had a few self sufficient communities only to be suppressed and eliminated once it threatens mainstream society. Many of us must break away from the Willie Lynch Syndrome. When the plantation owner was sick the slave would say master wes sick today? We should not go along with the crowd and be self thinkers but we can not be so educated that we separate from who we are because it cant be achieved. No matter how much is on that bank statement you are the race that you were born. Maybe having one of your own in charge today will open the door to have your great grandchild in charge tomorrow. I witness other races be it Jews, Italians and other races stick together through thick and thin come hell or high water but we must not look to separate. Here in New York City it basically made up on individual ethnic villages. What goes on in those communities its not even known by the police. They have a situation they close ranks and handle it themselves. We as African Americans still have many rivers to cross. It starts with our thinking followed by our actions. H-town must become inclusive to progress. While Houston is much more tolerant than its sister city Dallas who has yet to send a prominent African American such as Barbara Jordan, Mickey Leland or Shelia Jackson Lee just to name a few. All representing the same district I believe. It is not the city it was in 1970 and can not be run the same way. It must be inclusive from the west to the east, from the north to the south.
