Ben Phillips. I stood in front of the water tower and took pictures on my way to Sonny and Cher s first concert in Fresno. And my elementary school Holland School, which had PTA meetings where people had to stand outside because there was no other room inside and where I was when we heard Kennedy was shot, sat on the back side of the Starlight Drive In which is now Valley Fair Mall. Manchester Center was the mall and Mc Donalds on Blackstone and Shields had only sold One Million hamburgers. The largest swimming pool in California was at the Plunge at the airport. Mc Clane High School was brand new. And so was Selland Arena The fanciest night club was the Hacienda. The Grizzlies were the Giants and I made my first homemade butter at the cow barns in second grade at Fresno State which was actually Fresno State at the time and always the Bulldogs. Bobs Big Boy was on the corner of Blackstone and Shaw across from Wonderland Skating Rink and Pool which was across from Luigi Pizza. My dad opened both Kmarts Chestnut and Blackstone, Cedar Lanes resturant and Pardinis were the best in town, and the only place you could get Caesar Salads. Christmas Tree Lane was always Christmas Tree Lane, I grew up in the production room of Channel 30 (KFRE - CBS at the time) and there was nothing between Corsegold and the North end of town which was the cutoff for Lake Millerton and the only two things that were in Clovis was the rodeo and race track. Storybook Lane was brand new. Roeding Park had the best pink popcorn and the paddle boats. The houses on Cedar and Ashland were built and at the opening I met Harlan Sanders (Colonel Sanders) Johnny Mathis and the Three Stooges. My baby sitter was Marv Harrison - Flippo Jr. and my buddy was AL Radka....my mom was secretary to the program director at KFRE. The new freeway went through our first house on Santa Ana Ave. And my brother stood on our roof and watched the Mariposa fire burn. One last thing the Fulton mall was still a street and Karches bakery was the best. These are things from the original Fresno. Memorries........like the corners of your mind.....
