Benalla and District Cricket:- Delatite seizes eighth in a row (SNews) Delatite took care of Benalla by 40 runs on Saturday to win its eighth consecutive Benalla and District Cricket Association game. After starting the season inconsistently, the Twenty20 champion has come home in a rush to finish the home-and-away rounds just two points behind the previously raging premiership-favourite Violet Town. The win against an understrength Benalla was set-up by some commanding performances with the bat after the home side sent Delatite in. Captain Andrew Startin (58) continued his impressive season, while wicketkeeper Lachlan Christopher (49) saw Delatite reach 6-193 from their 40 overs. Delatite vice-captain Matt Stevenson said it was not a perfect performance, but his team will head into the finals full of confidence. ‘‘They were really undermanned and didn’t have a full 11 on the field, but it was still a danger game for us just before finals,’’ Stevenson said. ‘‘We bowled okay — probably a bit short at times — but our batting was the most pleasing thing.’’ ‘‘Andrew Startin was hitting them well, while Mitch Purcell has been pretty consistent all year, along with a few other guys making some runs.’’ Despite only being able to give eight players a bat, Benalla took it right up to its most fancied opposition during the chase. Captain Sam Hazell (43) and Cody Crawford put on 65 for the first wicket before the latter was dismissed by Rumesh Ranasinghe. First-drop Jesse Hazell (47) held up the innings, but he ran out of partners as Benalla finished on 7-153 after 39 overs. Ranasinghe and Stevenson both took three wickets, as Delatite booked an intriguing semifinal contest with Violet Town next week. In the other game, Warrenbayne gained the upper hand on its final opponent after comfortably defeating St Joseph’s. Warrenbayne hit 7-162 batting first, while St Joey’s fell 46 runs short after being bowled out for 116 in the 35th over.
