Bench dips are an excellent all-around exercise. They target your triceps, rear delts and back muscles. You can do them on a bench with your feet on the floor, or with your feet up using two benches which adds difficulty and allows you to place extra weight on your lap if you want. Its important that you stay close to the bench as you lower yourself down. Getting too far away from the bench puts stress on your shoulder. As with any exercise, you need to go full range of motion and squeeze (fully contract) your muscles at the top. I typically do bench dips when training triceps. I also like to superset them with another exercise. For example, a set of barbell curls followed by a set of bench dips. To get the best results perform 3-4 sets to failure.
