Bendigo 40 lost to Melton 44 at Epsom Huntly Reserve, practice match 15 March, 2014. The Melton Warriors outpointed the Keech Australia Fighting Miners 44-40 in the practice match at the Epsom Huntley Reserve last Saturday. As the score would indicate, both teams’ defensive play was inadequate as fourteen tries were scored. Unfortunately for the Miners, eight of them were scored by Melton. Melton had the support of a strong wind in the first half and used it to great advantage dominating field position, scoring four tries and leading 22-21 at the break. The Miners responded with three long range tries by Joseph Drahm, Jemesa Delana and Paula Maka. Two of these were the consequence of Melton spilling the ball when deep in attack, seeing a Bendigo player pick it up and run the length of the field. In the second half, the try-scoring spree continued with Melton getting four more to Bendigo’s three. Trailing by four points, Bendigo was deep in attack when referee Mark Luatutu terminated the match ten minutes early due to the presence of lightning. This match saw two more products of the Miners’ junior program (Cameron Billett & Gavin Beames) graduate to senior ranks. In addition, there were six newcomers to the team. Nick Wall, Tom Lewis, Mylez Petelo, Elijah Faia, Jemesa Delana and Tali Hagley all made their debuts for the Miners. Scorers: Drahm 3, Delana, Maka, Manderson tries; Manderson 6 goals.
