Bengal govt steps up efforts to increase employability of STs In view of the difficulty to fill up posts reserved for Scheduled Tribes (ST) in various departments, the state Backward Classes Welfare Department is setting up one-stop training cum information centres to make the tribals employable. Termed as I-centres, these will not only provide training on improving employability skills of the tribal students but will also provide information on jobs, the procedure for applying in them and scholarships along with details to avail those. Thus, an I-centre will not only train a tribal for a job but will also help him to bag the post. To begin with the department plans to set up 100 such centres in the blocks dominated by tribals. Around Rs six lakh will be spend to set up each I-centre. According to an official of the department, if things go as planned, the centres can start working from this year itself. Efforts have already been undertaken to identify the blocks where the centres are to be set up. Though work is at present being held up due to the elections it is expected that land for setting up the I-centres will be finalised by May, he said. The training programmes that are to be offered at these centres will be aimed at improving computer and communication skills of the tribal students. Apart from enhancing their spoken and written English skills, the programmes will mainly focus on preparing the students for jobs. The move comes close on the heels of a recruitment drive being launched by the state government recently to fill up 16,000 posts of SCs and STs in 16 departments. Among the vacant posts, 11,904 posts are for SCs and 4,437 are for STs. It has been found that lack of information coupled with requisite training has left people from SC and ST communities behind those in general category for securing jobs. The I-centres are aimed at addressing both the problems. Twenty two per cent government jobs are reserved for SCs and 6 per cent for STs in government jobs. sns
