Benghazi Every attack on our consulates must be taken very seriously. Two such attacks have occurred under Obama resulting in the deaths of four Americans. Every attack must be thoroughly investigated to determine the weakness that allowed it to happen and to use that information to strengthen security to prevent future attacks. There were over 270 American deaths from consulate attacks during the Reagan Administration. Hundreds of Americans were killed in terrorist bombings including consulate attacks under Clinton. There were 13 consulate attacks under Bush resulting in 52 deaths. For whatever reason, our consulates seem safer today than in years past. Exploiting a terrorist attack for political gain is inexcusable. It ignores the greater task of prevention. We need to focus on dodging the bullet not political retribution. The past cannot be altered. We cannot undo the Iraq war or untorture prisoners. We cannot make 911 go away. But, we can work together to strengthen security and honor human rights in a way that may prevent future atrocities.
