Five weeks into the strike by the ASUU, the Benin zone of the union says it is not about to call off the strike. Addressing journalists in Benin City, the zonal coordinator, of the Benin zone of ASUU, Dr. Sunny Ighalo said nothing short of the full implementation of the 2009 agreement and respect for the 2012 MoU will be acceptable for the union. This is the fifth week ASUU embarked on strike, and this time not the usual clamour for salary increase; the major issue they say, is revitalizing the university system and education in general in the country. The union says they are “protesting the underfunding and deliberate neglect of Nigerian universities by the federal government which has resulted in debilitating consequences on the nations’ universities”. The Benin zone of the union said they found it imperative to address the press following rumors that they will soon suspend the strike. They commended the students for their understanding urging to prevail on government to be responsive, responsible and honorable so as to provide better education for them and the future generationsm.
