Bent Lorentzen ~ PERHAPS IT WOULD HAVE BEEN BEST HAD ISRAEL NEVER BECOME A MODERN STATE… but I will state the same about any theocracy, borderline democratic or not. (this artilce-post is in an edit mode) Last night I watched a shocking documentary describing what Palestinians in the occupied regions are subjected to by Jewish settlers. This Australian video isnt it, but exposes it all perhaps even better. When I lived in NYC long ago, one of my best friends was a small-framed Jewish teacher married to this beautiful large African-American nurse, and remember holding in my arms their newborn naturally tanned child. His parents are now deceased but hes still a friend, so if he or other Jewish friends from the past sees this, I hope they understand where I am coming from, and that I am still the same person we shared bagels and laks (sliced smoked salmon) with. I consider myself savvy about deep human history, and know the history of the region which Israel occupies well, going back to antiquity and the classical period, and including the complex and brutal European and American maneuverings also with an emergent UN, post WW II, engendering the very existence of a modern Israel. We can go back hundreds of years, thousands even, and fingers from the 3 primary Abrahamic religions (Judaism, Christianity and Islam) can point ad-nauseam to each other about whom some mythical being in the sky has granted them special rights to own the land and its resources. The horrific Crusades perpetrated by Europe come to mind – contrary to myth, even the Danish flag is an emblem of that -- but that’s only a tiny fragment of the history, as is the Roman and other classical occupations, as kingdoms came and went. In the previous century, as European *democratic* empires began crumbling into constituent sovereign nations in the Middle East, especially after WW II, borders were forcefully carved out by special interests even from within the UN -- as in Persia, Africa and elsewhere -- such that they would continue to serve the economic interests of the European countries *granting* them independence. And this has led to perpetual states of wars, and ever increasing fundamentalism and terrorism not unlike what Zionists invented in the region in the late 1940’s The Holocaust did occur. Hitler and his cronies slaughtered +6 million Jews and many other peoples they considered *untermensch*, subhuman. Israel did become a state, as much as the USA became an ever larger nation following its history of holocausts with native and other populations through the socioeconomic *religion* of Manifest Destiny. So what to do? The answer, to me, is simple. In a modern rational world facing its most serious *natural* threat ever, anthropogenic climate change and mass extinction crisis, all religions must be disempowered from any socioeconomic and political influence. Since religion is one of the 5 primary behavioral characteristics to have evolved from all human groups, it won’t be easy. But it is time to see that this ancient response to shadowy fears, such as inevitable mortality, no longer serves any specific group’s cultural cohesion. The planet has evolved to one, all-too *schizophrenic* group interacting within one biosphere, and everything to do with religion having a role in that is suicidal for the whole human population. youtu.be/iqL048x4msM
