Benue State belongs to all the ethnic groups in Benue...and all - TopicsExpress

Benue State belongs to all the ethnic groups in Benue...and all the ethnic groups in Benue belong to Benue. In other words, Benue belongs to all of us! Yet somehow, it seems the Benue State Governorship seat has become the birthright of only a single tribe - the Tiv. I have nothing against my beloved Tiv brothers and sisters, but should we continue look for competent leaders only among a particular ethnic group when it is glaring that tribe has nothing to do with competent and responsible leadership? No! Is the seeming reservation of the number one seat in Benue for the Tiv ethnic group the result of an agreement reached by leaders of all ethnic groups in Benue? When did that happen? Why is the zoning arrangement that is known to work so well in Nigerias democracy not applicable when it comes to electing the governor of the state? Should we vote for a candidate just because he comes from a particular tribe? Does any tribe have a monopoly of good leadership? Could it be the Idoma candidates have not been taken seriously because they always seem to be contesting for the governorship of the yet-to-be-created Apa State rather than Benue? Perhaps they are seen by Benue voters to be seeking ministerial appointments and not really seeking the number one seat of the state! What do you think? Would you vote for a candidate in the next Benue State elections only because s/he is from your ethnic group, or would you vote for a competent, God-fearing and focused candidate from any tribe? We must wake up from tribal politics and look for the best man or woman! Come on! Obama, of Kenyan origin is the president of America, the country we regard as our teacher in democracy.
