Berghain bootcamp volume 2: A few weeks ago, I wrote about how my DJ set at Berghain profoundly affected my outlook on techno, as well as restoring my passion for a craft that Ive spent almost half of my life molding. As if that wasnt enough to keep me going, Berghain struck again. This time, from a different angle. I went as a fan, I paid admission, and I raved my ass off! I didnt personally know a single DJ playing that night, so I was excited to just go get lost in the crowd. Again, it brought me back to what first drew me to this music. It felt great and refreshing to not network, talk about DJ gigs, agents, production, or anything like that. Just me, my wife, and great friends sweating up a storm! I need to do this more often. And Levon Vincent (Official_Page)s set...that dude has courage. To have the confidence to let a 7 minute drum workout play all the way through, knowing that this is where the room needed to go, and to take chances like he did...it was very inspiring. I probably knew less than 10% of the tracks he was playing, and I felt like I was at my first rave all over again (Paoli Peaks, anyone?). Ive been in Berlin for about 2 years, and while Ive heard many good sets that got the job done, I can probably count on one hand the sets that have really been special to me. This was without a doubt one of them. Incredible. This last month of techno experiences have been incredibly valuable to washing away my jadedness and cynicism about the music. Sometimes when you work in the industry, you can forget what its like to be in the crowd, and how big of a role the crowd plays in keeping the music pushing forward and thriving. I think it goes without saying that I need to prune my branches on a regular basis. Its good to be having fun with this again!
