Berks Catholics Brooke Wensel to play softball at Lafayette By Brian Rippey | Brooke Wensel Brooke Wensel enjoys playing soccer and basketball at Berks Catholic. But those two sports pale in comparison to what she really is passionate about: softball. I really love the sport, Wensel said. It comes to me easier than soccer and basketball. With that choice made, Wensel had to decide where she wanted to continue her athletic and academic careers. She made it official last week when she signed a letter of intent to play softball at Lafayette College. She credited coach Jexx Varner with getting her interested in attending the school in Easton. I got a really good first impression of him, Wensel said. I fell in love with everything; the campus, the team, the location. Wensels love affair with softball didnt bloom until late. She played baseball in the Pine Forge Athletic Association until she switched to softball as a freshman. Wensel, who plays shortstop and does some catching at Berks Catholic, also plays for the Tri-County Thunder out of Pine Forge. Wensel has received honorable mention to the Berks II teams in girls basketball and soccer. In softball she has been a two-time all-division pick at shortstop for her hitting and her defense. She can play any position you want her to play other than pitcher, Berks Catholic coach John Marabella said. She has outstanding range. At 5-11, Wensel isnt the typical middle infielder but uses her size to cover more ground and the strong arm she developed while playing baseball to throw out runners from anywhere in the infield. It gives me better range, Wensel said about her size. It also has helped her be competitive in basketball and soccer. But when she arrives at Lafayette in the fall, her focus will be on academics and softball. Im going to miss them, soccer mostly because of my teammates, Wensel said. But I always knew I wanted to play softball.
