U met him at the Club of cos! a few seconds ago · Like Maurice Neo My Politics Series Foto taken on one of Raffles Institution side fields at the Bras Basah ground where the current Raffles City is. Me at 17, arguably, Raffles best best senior team rugby captain ever, its true believe it! haha! Always the captain since junior team but not athletically the top among my team mates. Many of whom were double schoolboy internationals. Some full internationals even at that age.Great political skills maybe, on my part. For the record have to mention my rugger master then was Mr Lam Peck Heng. Now Chairman of Marine Parade PAP and close mate of Goh Chok Tong since his schooldays, also both at Raffles. Mr Lam wanted to scrap traditional elections for the captaincy as I did not hang around enough with the boys at Bakers Bakery, Victoria Street, near the CHIJ Convent. Spent most of my time in the scout den and was also School debating captain. So Mr Lam thought I needed help. But I was confident enough to turn down his offer to appoint me. The rest is history that has not ended! Never mind whether the cat is black or white so long as it catches mice. For instance in my senior year we did not lose a single game. And the School was champ at every level including the Sevens. Those days we played heck a lot of matches as there were more tournaments, besides the Schools National Championship. We had the Ang Mohs to contend with as the British and Anzuk Forces had busy programmes for the locals, meant to promote native rugger. Immediate logical concern now: Could I have not stopped the present more than 3-decade terminal decline of Raffles rugby? More than just a decline of a sport of course. Lost of the Rafflesian soul. Indeed, Mr Lam attended a rugger match last year. He could not take it and left within half and hour. Kat Chun, Kim Wee, Betty Ong and 8 others like this.
