Bernard Hoffers Ligeti Split is one of two world premieres - TopicsExpress

Bernard Hoffers Ligeti Split is one of two world premieres featured at our season opening concert Shall We Dance on Saturday, October 25th. Hoffer on Ligety: György Ligeti is probably my favorite composer of the second half of the twentieth century. Webster defines “lickety-split” as “at full speed.” “Split,” in the jazz vernacular, means to leave or having left. The pun formed by combining the two ideas has been in my mind for years. This is a case where the title determined the structure and nature of this piece—the title came before the music. It starts with large pianissimo chords that intertwine, much in the nature of what Ligety does in his Atmosphères, and then disintegrates, or better, morphs into jazz—in the form of both a quartet featuring the piano and the vibes, and a big band. I’m certain that Ligety must have had a taste for Jazz: see his Hungarian Rock for piano. These diverse elements have had a great influence on my music: Ligety, Bill Evans, and Stan Kenton. —Bernard Hoffer Join us for the world premiere 10/25: NEPhilharmonic.org
