Bernstein was not known to have performed Bruckner often, but when he did, e.g., the Sixth and Ninth Symphonies, it was an event to treasure like this one of the composers boldest and grandest work which thankfully was preserved by DG. In this live recording, you can expect what youve heard in a typical Lenny all along - emotional intensity at its fullest. But he was in a rare mood of a good control and restraint as well, forging the prestigious Viennese players into an ensemble with cogency, poise and unmatched tonal refinement. If its still hard for you to imagine a Bernstein-Bruckner connection, close your eyes and just let yourself washed by the sumptuous sound of the VPO. Its a thrilling account of Bruckners greatest work.
