Berts Sports Shooter Academy XI Dining Experience #4: Carbo-Packing at Dorias Haus of Pizza. For a change of pace, away from all of the wonderful Asian food near the SSA headquarters, Deanna, Michael Der, Bob Deutsch and I decided to look for some good old American Italian food. We ended up at Darias Haus of Pizza on Harbor Blvd., the use of Haus rather than House is in deference to the owners German heritage. Like most Italian restaurants in this country, the pasta dishes are drenched in sauce. I prefer much lighter touch on the sauce so I can enjoy the texture and flavor of the pasta. I ordered the sausage with green peppers, unfortunately they werent sautéed together and the side of spaghetti hidden under a mound of marinara. Bobs dinner had a choice of sides, so instead of a salad and he selected the garlic bread...which was a huge basket full of cheesy, buttery French bread. But the true star was the pizza Deanna ordered. Not quite as thick a crust as traditional Chicago pizza but still doughy with a crispy bottom. It was baked to perfection with the toppings hot but not swimming in an ocean of cheese. Definitely worth the short drive from the hotel. Dorias reminded me of the small Italian places youd eat out at with your family in the 60s or 70s ... dark, warm, friendly and reasonably priced. If I were running in a marathon after dinner, I was certainly set.
