Bessies Adventure Walk, 12/28/13 Hi Mike! Thank you so much for sponsoring a shelter dog in need of some exercise! Because of your kind donation, Bessie, a super sweet pitty mix who was full of energy, was able to go for a big hike along the Floodwall and surrounding trails. When I first walked over to Bessie in her kennel, she was climbing the walls, and jumping so high that her face cleared the kennel door. It was easy to see you chose the right dog to get a hike! Even with all that energy, Bessie did her very best to mind her manners as we exited the shelter, and she was just perfect on the car ride out to the park. Outside of the shelter, Bessie was a little more reserved than I expected. The noise coming off the river seemed to make her a little nervous, and she was very alert as we hiked. Bessie wouldnt take dog cookies from me and although she seemed comfortable being next to me, and enjoyed a scratch on her rear end, she wasnt very accepting of affection. We ended up jogging the entire flood wall and then some. I have to say, Bessie runs like a dream! She loved covering ground at a faster pace and stayed right at my side the whole time, looking up to check in sometimes. I was so impressed with her good walking manners, but really wanted her to come out of her shell a little. Back at my car, I pulled out some meaty treats to see if shed like those better than the cookies. Right when Bessie caught a smell of the treats, her ears perked up, she sat at attention, and her tail started going a mile a minute! At that moment, everything turned around! Bessie was playful, outgoing and loving. She so enjoyed getting her treats and soaked up all the attention she could! I was so happy that she let her guard down, and we ended up going to Belle Isle and doing another whole hike that she could really enjoy. Bessie played, dipped her toes in the water, explored and got tons of snuggles. She was so happy, and rested her chin on my shoulder on the ride home. Im so happy that we learned a little more about what she likes, so it will be that much easier for the shelter to find her a home.
