Best Albums of 2014 #14: Andrew Bird: Things Are Really Great Here, Sort Of...: I’ve long championed Bird as a musical wunderkind who makes uncategorizable music and his latest is just further example. An expert at all he touches (that voice, his virtuosic whistling, his innovative violin playing, etc., etc.) Bird’s latest is an album of all covers. In true idiosyncratic Bird fashion, the album is entirely composed of songs from the little-known alternative country band The Handsome Family. As such, the album maintains the more recent turn by Bird toward more traditional sounds. Despite the lack of original songs, Bird owns this material and his performances on such dark oddities as Giant of Illinois and Drunk By Noon showcase material strong enough to be mistaken for Bird’s own.
