Best Practice for Physiotherapy professionals :: When a patient comes to you with a prescription from any referring Doctor to give some specific machine treatment or exercises for certain number of days, look at the prescription and ask the patient technical questions depending on the condition like @ what intensity/mode/dosage/duration/type of current/pulse/continuous etc. to be given for his condition , which generally is not mentioned in the prescription.. Then educate/counsel the patient on •How physiotherapy is an independent profession than that of the profession of the Referring Doctor , •How you have a better knowledge about Physiotherapy treatment for the condition he/she is suffering, •How does patient gets benefited if the Physio is allowed to completely assess, diagnose and plan their treatment for a better result. •How ethical it is for a Doctor, NOT to interfere in the treatment plan of other Medical practices, •How some/prescribed modality is contra indicated for certain conditions in case of wrong prescriptions. •Most Importantly, How Physiotherapy exercises are helpful to treat the root cause of the problem. It is very important to highlight that Pain is just a symptom; the objective of the Physiotherapy treatment is to treat the root cause of the problem by improving Muscle Endurance, Muscle Flexibility, Neuro Muscular Co-ordination, Cardio respiratory endurance and Balance to improve postural impairment. Kindly note this will require everyone to be united and practice in the interest of profession. We should not think that if we don’t follow the prescription, we may lose the patients. This may hold true for certain no. patients but they will also understand if we counsel them on a right way. Always there will be resistance from the other side in the beginning but when everyone raises their voice on the right method of treatment, then no one can deny the fact of getting the benefits for the society by following the genuine practice. Kindly share your suggestions as well on how you deal with such prescriptions in your clinical practice.
