Best birthday present I could have ever wished for .... My doctor said my latest HIV blood tests results had arrived - on my birthday of all days! Somehow, I knew it would be a significant one. So I turn up at the doctors with a bottle of wine in my bag - to come in handy whatever the weather. Grinning, the doc says that the viral loads in my blood count are now whats called undetectable and with just a few more months, Ill be safe enough (although opinions differ country to country and extra precautions will help) to be able to have HIV negative children. With screeches blaring across the waiting room, the bewildered reception staff wonder what this London boy with broken German is squealing on about. The door blasts opens and we skid out to crack open the shandy amidst the coughs and splutters of the waiting room and raise a toast - Lachaim! [Yiddish for to life!] Its funny how life swings so fast and you land up dizzy on the roundabout. Having children was the first dream on the scrapheap when I got the diagnosis 8 years ago. Now in just 5 months since starting medication, the Gods of convention can stick it so far where the sun dont shine. I can become the family man Ive always wanted to be. [Witness the sound of sighs with relief from potential baby fathers and mothers across the world]. Play with fire, watch your fingers burn - I know. But in all situations as life is so short, hold tight the strength of those around you, fight ignorance everywhere and trust that fate is never absolute. Thirty years ago, the hopelessness of the pharmaceutical industries brought my HIV activist heroines out in force to demand medication. Now the medical results from this struggle provides hope for many (but not nearly enough - the struggle continues) with HIV across the world. Not wearing a jonny got me in this tangle in the first place - now not wearing one could provide me the biggest dream ever - to come true. So in tribute, whenever it arrives, I think we should call our little blessing Jonny. Life can be strange, but sometimes, its f&*%^n glorious. I love you so much pals XXXXXX
