Best bits of Shanghai. 1. The driver of the airport shuttle dropping us nowhere near where he was supposed to and pointing vaguely when questioned as to which way we should go. 2. The Bund at night (beautiful colonial architecture along the riverside). 3. East Nanjing Street - playing the how many times will be offered watches, bags or flashing roller skates game. 4. Yuyuan Gardens - the Chinese love rocks, especially those that have been cemented together to look like one big rock. They love it. 5. Site of the first Chinese Communist Party National Congress - good historically relevant landmark - did you know that their next meeting was held in a pleasure boat out on a lake? Very communist. 6. Xintiandi shopping area (a bunch of converted old school Chinese houses called Shinkumen). 7. Tianzifang - another shopping district, this time in a warren of alleyways (and one shop was manned by a six year old boy in a builders helmet). 8. The Bund Sightseeing Tunnel - need an expensive way to cross the river that may also trigger an epileptic seizure? The Bund Sightseeing Tunnel may well be just the thing youre looking for. 9. Shanghai Museum - lots of pottery and statues. 10. Shanghai Urban Planning Museum - scale model of Shanghai and photos of Old School Shanghai (most of the new flashy buildings are younger than me). 11. Jingan Temple (massive and very gold) and Jade Buddha Temple (exactly what it sounds like). 12. Propaganda Poster Museum (hidden in the basement of a block of flats) - amazing insight into the Cult of Mao and depictions of UK and USA. 13. Day-trip to Hangzhou - lovely walk around the beautiful West Lake and a peek into Leifeng Pagoda (complete with outdoor escalator and preserved ruins of the old temple).
