Best bits of Washington D.C. 1. Being told by the taxi attendant we asked for directions that our hostel was not in walking distance. Oh ye of little faith. 2. Having to take our shoes off at the hostel. 3. Meeting the first person on our entire trip who has heard of Poole, only to discover that he lived in Bournemouth for four years and worked at Tower Park Chiquitos. 4.Realising that the Ford Theatre (where Lincoln was assassinated) had free admission. 5. The Smithsonian (also free) museums of Natural History (dinosaurs!) and Air and Space (rockets!) - it was like being ten again. 6. The Phillips Collection (art), featuring a Van Gogh exhibition (examining paintings that he repeated more than once and their differences and similarities) and a room in which all of the walls were covered in beeswax (it smelt like honey). 6. Popping by The White House to give Barack and Michelle a wave (In my mind they were stood behind that three inch thick bullet proof window waving right back). 7.The National Archives - home to the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. 8. The Thomas Jefferson Library of Congress - home to one of the copies of the Guttenburg Bible. 9. The Folger Shakespeare Library - home of over eighty of the two hundred and forty known original copies of The Bards First Folio (we also read a scene that was added to Romeo and Juliet in the years after Bills death in which Romeos poison doesnt kick as quickly and the pair have a final conversation. It was not as good.) 10. The National Art Gallery (another Smithsonian - this Smith guy was English by the way - youre welcome America). 11. The Newseum (a museum about the news - Boring! I hear you cry - but wait, whats this? An Anchorman Exhibition? Great Odins Raven!) 12. Free performance at the JFK Center for the Performing Arts. 13. Walking around the various monuments (Lincoln, MLK, WWI and II) along the National Mall.
