Best comment so far: Che Beauchard There are worse career plans than to obtain a Ph.D. For example, one could enter journalism to become a reporter for a major newspaper like the N.Y. Times in order to bring the truth to the people, only to find that newspapers are a dying business and are not interested in revealing the truth. Or one could study public administration to begin a career in government to provide better services, only to find governments being drowned in the bathtub. Or one could enlist in the military to make the world safe for democracy, only to find ones self dropping bombs on wedding parties. One could become a politician with an eye to making the country a better place; enough said. Or one could become a banker to help the economy grow and to help families own their own homes; ditto. One could begin a career in a corporation to build a life of security for ones self and to provide needed services and goods to ones fellow citizens; lol. Are any of these less a pipe dream than to enter a graduate Ph.D. program? Better to make ones life work writing experimental poetry while devoting ones spare time to fomenting revolution. Surely that would have been a better choice 20 years ago than trying to secure a career in computer science only to see the whole game outsourced to India or Sri Lanka, and it likely would have provided a greater good for mankind. Whether viewed in terms of self interest or the common good, most career choices are increasingly turning out to be illusions.
