Beth & I are observing the holidays in our own way, by playing our original game, Celebrity Death Swap, over dinner. It goes like this: You pick a public figure who died far too young and, to rectify the loss of that person, swap him or her for a comparable person who burned out young and hung around unproductively too long. It began when I suggested swapping George Gershwin for Irving Berlin. Since then, our list has ballooned: Carole Lombard for Lana Turner, John Garfield for James Cagney,Selena for Jennifer Lopez, Tupac Shakur for Will Smith, John Kennedy Toole for JD Salinger, Heath Ledger for Owen Wilson -- and a few tough ones; Buddy Holly for Willie Nelson right after Red Headed Stranger, James Dean for Marlon Brando after The Godfather, Sam Cooke for Ray Charles after Modern Sounds in Country & Western Music. A few are stumping us: Lindsay Lohan, Justin Bieber, Gary Busey, Mickey Rooney (lived/living too long), Philip Seymour Hoffman, Peter Sellers, River Phoenix, James Gandolfini, Basquiat, Bob Marley, AMy Winehouse (gone too soon, probably would have contributed much more). Do you have any suggestions about who to match these folks with -- and other matches to add to the list?
