Bethan Jenkins, Plaid Cymru AM for South Wales West quote to media on unity mine- The loss of over 180 jobs in the Neath valley is another massive blow for an area that has already lost a major employer - TRW at Resolven - in recent times, with no new work anywhere on the horizon. There needs to be a transparent explanation from the Welsh Government and Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council as to why this mine could not be saved. The owners have highlighted issues with planning applications, yet when I asked the economic development minister about what they were recently, she would not answer. It would be a huge concern if it subsequently transpires that more could be done to prevent these jobs from going. Every public official in every authority in Wales needs to be prepared to fight tooth and nail to keep what jobs we already have. Anything else will only contribute to the death-by-a-thousand-cuts we are seeing in areas like the Neath Valley.
