Between Tuesday 24 and Thursday 26 June be part of powerful global stories brought to the stage as part of LIFT 2014. LIFT is a festival of international theatre and performance that connects the World with London and London with the World and this year it brings two astounding shows to Southbank Centre. From the Netherlands comes The Great War an inventive show featuring live animation and a miniature film set. The audience is witness to the reconstruction of the Western Front on a tiny scale, using soil, parsley and rusty nails while a Foley artist provides the soundtrack to the film. A rap on the table sounds like a hand grenade exploding, the striking of a match is mustard gas being released. This is a production that deftly reminds us of the horror of war. They tell their parents stories of lives lived in the grip of dictatorship. Playful and political, The year I was born gives a seldom-seen and highly personal insight into the impact of a parents actions. Two generations face one another in a reckoning of both the joy of childhood and the dark secrets from a bloody moment in international history. Book here: j.mp/1lchyjg
