Between all of this discussion of police brutality and suicide, my mind has been going into overdrive. I want to discuss suicide for a second. I feel like anybody with a brain can tell you this, but suicide, suicidal thoughts, self-harm, and depression are not things to be taken lightly. I keep seeing this dialogue that keeps reasserting that suicide is selfish and that Robin Williams was a druggie who couldnt control his emotions and hated himself so much that he couldnt get his addiction under control. Im tired. Im tired of seeing this type of talk. Im tired of the general lack of empathy that people assert when discussing these very sensitive and real topics. Regardless of what drove him to commit suicide, it isnt his fault and he shouldnt be spoken badly about because he was in too much pain to seek the help he really needed. Gosh, where are your hearts??? Unless youve ever felt suicidal, you have NO idea what that man was going through. Unless youve struggled with addiction, then you have no idea what it feels like to go through withdrawals, night sweats, and the joy and accompanying guilt and grief that comes each time youre able to get your next fix. You have no idea, and criticizing and blaming those that have attempted or committed suicide will not prevent others from doing so. It didnt stop those that already have. We talk about people who have killed themselves like they were worthless people who deserved to die because they were too weak to endure life. Surely this isnt the type of idea we wish to perpetuate, is it? People who are suicidal need your help. They need your support. They need your empathy and you ability to recognize that they are in deep pain, and they need a piece of your strength so that they can walk into the next day knowing that they were able to at least survive the trials of the previous day, so maybe there is hope for the next day as well. They dont need your criticism. That is the LAST thing they need. Ill be posting about this topic again very soon. Stay tuned.
