Between now and Wednesday I will be working hard with my colleagues to restore the cuts, fully, to the One Minneapolis Fund (180,000), the Clean Energy Partnership (75,000), Homeownership and foreclosure prevention support (125,000) and for a credible external evaluation of our community engagement system (70,000). I believe we can do this without increasing the levy even if it means we have less to spend on promoting shopping downtown or to enhance our Meet Minneapolis tourism-promotion contract. I am also working on a budget staff direction amendment that would direct staff to compile the data on misdemeanor cases by race, gender, age, geography, and offence for the years 2010-2014, and present it to the Public Safety, Civil Rights and Emergency Management committee in the first quarter of 2015. I believe this information is critical if we are to understand and correct how Minneapolis’ police and prosecutorial practices are perpetuating historic and institutionalized racism. Additionally I hope to move to direct the Attorney’s Office and Police Department to make recommendations concerning policies and protocols for the recording and reporting of demographic information of police stops that do not necessarily lead to a police report or arrest.
