Between the terms and actions of "imitation" and "transformation," Canetti (in his book Crowds and Power) inserts the term "simulation". “When the stress is on concealing what one is, rather than on pretending to be what one is not, the common term is, of course, dissimulation; but in practice they and generally not be separated” (370). Generally cannot be separated, one observes, EXCEPT that we distinguish when the stress is on concealing what one is, rather than on pretending to be what one is not. The self-annihilating quality of Canetti’s text almost takes on comic proportions here.
