Beverley and Holderness MP welcomes help for local fisherman Earlier this month the Government announced additional measures to help fisherman who have been affected by recent adverse weather events. The new schemes include exempting all English fishing vessels from lighthouse dues for 2014 and making European Fisheries Fund money available to reimburse up to 60 percent of the cost of replacing lost or damaged equipment. Graham Stuart MP commented: “The fishing industry in Holderness is vital to our local economy, and it is good news that help is being made available to those who were disadvantaged by the storms in December and January. This Government is committed to ensuring the UK fishing industry fully recovers from the effects of the bad weather this winter, and these new schemes will bring that prospect closer to reality.” Councillor Arthur Hodgson, Chairman of the Holderness Coast Fishing Local Action Group, said: “I am pleased to see the actions to support the fishermen, who have been affected by recent events. The removal cost of lighthouse dues this year, will help the industry. “Making financial support available under the European Fisheries Fund of up to 60% of the cost of replacing lost or damaged gear, such as lobster and crab pots will be of great help to them. But we MUST ensure that these schemes are easy to gain access to and see that all relevant parties made aware of what is available and how these schemes are to be managed. “We must have an established method both of obtaining support and speedy method of claiming, the present method is slow and cumbersome and will not do for reactive support as is intended with this new funding.” Later this week Mr Stuart will be visiting the new fishing compound development in Withernsea to hear how local fishermen will benefit from the £960,000 upgrade project.
