Beware of new telephone scam hitting Berkhamsted now. Dear Watch Member, Please be aware of a new telephone scam which is currently being used across Berkhamsted. The caller usually says he is a Sergeant from Paddington. Popular names used so far have been Sergeant Englebert and Sergeant Povey. The caller usually tells you that they have two males in custody who have used your bank cards. They will tell you to call 101 or 999 to verify their story if you seem suspicious of them. DO NOT RING ON THE SAME PHONE! They will not hang up when you do and just pass the phone to another person who corroborates their story. The victim is then asked for their PIN number and is told to cut up their bank card in a certain way and give it to the courier who arrives later. Luckily many people who have received this phone call have either seen the previous OWL message about it or have become suspicious on their own. Some people will be fooled by this however and it is important for us to protect as many vulnerable people as possible from falling foul of the scam. The attached file is the poster which we are widely distributing to make the public aware of this scam. Please pass it on to anyone who is vulnerable or elderly.
