Beyond all the ice bucket challenges and frenzies, this is the true effect of ALS. Joost van der Westhuizen, one of South Africas rugby legends, was diagnosed with ALS and has been quite badly affected. It was both sad and heartwarming to see him take one more trip across the field. I cant imagine what was going through his mind, sadness at not being able to scurry and scrum his way across like he used to, or joy and pride at hearing the crowds shout his name.
