Beyond just an art exhibition- ( The Hindu ) In a bid to generate funds for the rehabilitation of victims of Uttarakhand’s catastrophic flashfloods, a three-day exhibition, featuring paintings of 14 contemporary artists, will be inaugurated at the Visual Art Gallery of India Habitat Centre here this Sunday. According to Swami Samidanand of Abheda Ganga Mayya Trust, which works for humanity and environmental activities like conservation of the Ganga river, a part of the funds will be utilised for constructing 60 houses at Toshi village in Rudraprayag district. The funds will be collected after the culmination of the exhibition titled ‘The Raudra’. All the artists — C.N. Karunakaran, T. Kaladharan, Madhu V., Bahuleyan, Priti Kahar, Bose Krishnamachari, Murali Cheeroth, Josh P.S., Sridhar Iyer, Subbanna, Anoop Kamath, Krishna Murari, Ajay Lal and Suparna Modal— participated in a ten-day art camp at Dayara Barsu near Gangotri in June. “Apart from a few dozen houses in this village, this Himalayan retreat had no television, mobile connectivity or Internet connection,” says curator Shaji Punchathu. Senior artist C.N. Karunkaran has painted rivers and mountains to convey serenity and stillness in the atmosphere. Anoop Kamath has depicted the trauma of displacement in his work. Subbanna’s work represents the Himalayan sheep. The sheep exists to fight with the rain and snowfall. Thus it becomes a symbol of existence. Painting ‘Drama without Curtain’ by Shridhar Iyer invites us to experience the transcendental world. Krishna Murari’s ‘Yellow Cloud’ also leads us to the same conclusion. Suparna Mondal in ‘Killing our Heaven’ depicts the swathe of vehicles that enter the Himalayas.
