Bhai Gurbaksh Singh Khalsa who is campaigning for the release of Sikh Prisoners from Indian Jails who have already completed their sentences. The World Sikh Council – American Region Also released press release: (WSC-AR) expresses deep concern about the situation developing in Punjab arising out of a Sikh’s peaceful efforts to persuade the Indian government to follow the law of the land. Bhai Gurbaksh Singh is on a hunger strike since November 14, 2014 to protest against the continued detention of hundreds of Sikhs under counterinsurgency laws for a prolonged period. This is a second time he has gone on an indefinite hunger strike. Bhai Gurbaksh Singh is currently holding his hunger strike protest at Gurdwara Lakhnaur Sahib, Ambala, Haryana, India. Last year after promises made by the Sikh leadership he stopped his 44 day hunger strike. Those promises were never kept so on the one year anniversary he is now 30 days into his renewed protest. Under Indian law, a life term lasts 14 years. There are many Sikhs languishing in jails all over India who have served more than 14 years, yet remain confined. According to the papers submitted by the States of Punjab and Haryana to the Punjab and Haryana High Court, there are no less than 237 inmates in these two states alone who have completed life term. There is strong concern that the state bodies and representatives are not interested in taking any action due to institutional bias.
