Bharanas Latest a Psycho Drama By A Sharadhaa Director T S Nagabharana, whose last release was Kamsale Kaisale in 2012, is now returning with Vasundhara, slated for release soon. Citing reasons for the two-year delay, Nagabharana explains, “I became the chairman of Karnataka Chalanachitra Academy which took up most of my time. I was not only missing direction, but many other things.” The director also realised that he needed to evolve to the expectations of the present audience. “I was branded a a maker of art-house and folklore-inspired films. That’s when I thought about doing a different kind of film and Vasundhara happened, which is an incident-oriented film,” he says. But he also insists that he did not push himself to make Vasundhara only to match the present generation’s expectations. “I knew that it was very much needed. I had to come to terms and do such films. Like technology, updating content was important. Initially, my films revolved around a method of ‘period story telling’ and it can be seen in my films like Santha Shishunala Sharifa, Nagamandala, Chinnari Mutha, Janamada Jodi among other movies. Of course I used have done justice to those movies too but I had also worked with urban oriented subjects like Vimochana. In fact, my film Chigurida Kanasu was remade as Swadesh in Hindi. But then again, it had that rural touch. It was time, I thought for the Gen X,” explains Nagabharana, who did have some difficulties, but overcame them because his son, Pannaga Bharana, who was with him to help. “He helped with working on some cliches like the songs. The orientation of songs was different from the ones I had done earlier, and Pannaga helped me in changing it. He also taught me the cutting pattern, in which I was slow. While the content and approach is mine, in some instances, I had to follow him. I was so used to the traditional way of filmmaking, and he knew the digital way of handling it. So the combination worked,” he says. Having given a lot of thought to the movie, rather than opt for experienced actors and, he picked Avinash and Aisshwarya Nag as the lead pair, along with young talents like Pannaga and Dharma. “Interestingly, this formed a new troupe. Of course, there were senior actors like Rajesh, Jayanthi and Sudha Rani, but it was more or less like a school for these young talents when I started moulding them.” he says. And he states that Vasundhara has a strong message which is apt for today. “The film revolves around the difficulties of life, and how a woman struggles and fights back for the sake of truth. The undercurrent is that while we feel terrorism comes from outside, it lies within, which I keep questioning in the film,” he says. newindianexpress/entertainment/kannada/Bharanas-Latest-a-Psycho-Drama/2014/01/30/article2027738.ece
