Bhopal (derived from Bhojpal) is believed to have been founded by Raja Bhoja, the philosopher King and polymath of medieval India, who ruled the kingdom of Malwa (1000-1055). Raja Bhoja, who belonged to the Rajput Paramara dynasty, also built numerous temples, including the Bhojeshvara Temple at Bhojpur, a city he founded about 30 km from Bhopal on the banks of River Betwa. The lowly and humble Gangu Teli has become immortal in his own right owing to comparison/ juxtaposition with the Great Raja Bhoja.
