Bible Challenge John 1: "Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!"* Jesus is the Word made flesh and the Lamb of God. Read John 1 online or look it up in your Bible. Going Deeper Before you start your daily reading, say a prayer asking God to guide your thinking as you read, and then read the Bible with the aim of learning something new. After the reading, consider how it may affect your life and relationship with your heavenly Father and allow your increased knowledge of the Scriptures to shape your character and strengthen your trust in God. Discussion notes on John 1 •Who is the Word made flesh (see v14)? •Is the Word also God (see v1)? •Why do you think John the Baptist called Jesus “the Lamb of God” (v29)? More on John 1 The three Gospels so far studied – Matthew, Mark and Luke – have much in common. In John there is no stories here of the birth and childhood of Jesus. Instead there is a prologue proclaiming God as the eternal Word who “became a human being and… lived among us”. The name of John, son of Zebedee, is rightly linked to this Gospel, but the possibility that it was actually compiled by someone else is suggested by the use of the phrase “that other disciple, whom Jesus loved” instead of the name John Before the birth of Jesus men had composed many image of God, with varying them had longed that God would ‘step out of the picture’. Christians believe this is exactly what happened in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. And this belief is the main theme of the fourth gospel Verse 19 to 28 – John the Baptist denies being the messiah. When the Baptist replied to the Jerusalem deputation that he was nothing more than ‘a voice crying aloud in the wilderness’ they naturally challenged his right to baptize. On verse 40 to 42 Jesus valued Peter, not only for what he was, but for what he could become. Long before he had earned the right to be regarded as a man of rock, Jesus gave him a name that would ever remind him of the Master’s faith in him The deeply spiritual message of John’s Gospel is presented with simplicity of language which makes it one of the richest treasures of biblical revelation
