#Bidah, according to shari’ah, is the worshipping of Allaah in ways that Allaah has not prescribed, neither is it found in the Sunnah of the Prophet (salAllaahu alayhi wa sallam), nor in the actions of the Pious Predecessors. Iblees loves Bidah (innovation) more than debauchery and disobedience because the harm of Bidah is in the essence of the religion. ~ [Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah] There are several ahadeeth of the Prophet (salAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) that indicate that every bidah is an act of misguidance. Below is a basic criteria that, if a certain act fulfills, it would be classified among the abhorred bidahs: 1 - Any statement, action, or belief that conflicts with the Sunnah. 2 - Any act that had been prohibited by Allaahs messenger (salAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) even if it is done with the intention of pleasing Him. 3 - Any act that requires proof with clear text or command, but has none. There is an exception to this in acts that were done continuously by a sahaabi without objection from other sahaabah. 4 - Any act that some scholars, especially those of later generations state, without an evidence, that it is recommended. 5 - Any act of worship that is only described in a weak or fabricated hadeeth. 6 - Excessiveness in worship. 7 - Any act of worship that is unrestricted by Allaah, but some people restrict it to a specific place, time, or number. The general masses of Muslims in current times are far from the true and sound understanding of Islaam derived from Allaahs Book and His Messengers Sunnah. This ignorance has resulted in numerous wrong beliefs and practices (or bidahs), which are usually based on weak ahadeeth, misinterpretations, imitations of disbelievers, non-Islamic cultural values, etc. May Allaah guide this Ummah to His Book and the Sunnah of His Messenger (salAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) in all their affairs.
