Big Congratulations to Herman Schuermans, one of the worlds fine people and rock promoters (and local city councilmembers!), who is celebrating the 40th anniversary of his lifes work, ROCK WERCHTER, the venerable festival not too far from Brussels with this years installment happening right now! R.E.M. first played Rock Werchter in 1985, on one of their first real tours of Europe, well down the bill in supporting U2, the Ramones and others. They loved the festival and the experience, and for the rest of their career, R.E.M. never missed Werchter. Every summer tour--1985, 1989, 1995, 1999, 2003, 2005 and 2008--every one of those R.E.M. tours included Werchter as a highlight, come hell, high water or a couple of times, scary lightning--seven times in all, which must be some kind of record.
