Big Darby Creek (Franklin, Madison, and Pickaway counties) - In summer weather creeks and rivers can provide fishing action. Smallmouth bass: Casting small crankbaits or plastics resembling crayfish or shiners can be rewarding. Target boulders, shoreline cover, where pools meet riffles, and current eddies. Rock bass: Can be caught using the same techniques as smallmouth bass. Other game fish present are bluegill, carp, crappie, channel and flathead catfish, saugeye and sauger. Kiser Lake (394 acres; Champaign County) - This lake in Champaign County is perfect for a quiet day on the water since no motors are allowed. Largemouth bass: (good population of largemouth bass); try plastics, top-water baits and crankbaits along the lily pads or cover on the north side of the lake. Crappie: Become more active as the water cools this fall, try using minnows in the old creek channel or around woody cover. Bluegill: Fish aquatic vegetation and cover using wax worms for good results. Fly fishing for bluegill is a good way to learn this fishing technique. NORTHWEST OHIO Outhwaite Reservoir, Bucyrus Reservoir #4 (160 acres, Crawford County) – Bluegill: are being caught on the east side of the reservoir. Try using maggots or wax worms. Yellow perch: are also being caught fishing with maggots a few feet above a sinker on the bottom. There is no motor size restriction but a “No Wake” zone exists throughout the reservoir. Sandusky River (Sandusky County) – Longnose Gar: have been biting on minnows fished under bobbers below the Ballville Dam during the day. Catfish: have been biting below the Ballville Dam using any of the common catfish baits. Fish are biting during the day and night. NORTHEAST OHIO Mogadore Reservoir (1,104 acres; Portage County) - Fishing from shore is somewhat limited, but the entire reservoir is available for boat fishing. Outward motors are limited to electric only. Largemouth bass: biting well on crankbaits, spinnerbaits, and plastic worms. Target deep weedlines. Catfish: cut shad remains as a top bait for channel catfish, which run big here. Sunfish: try wax worms under a bobber near shore. Spencer Lake (50 acres; Medina County) –Boats are restricted to electric motors only. Catfish: the bite has been consistent at night; use a variety of baits; chicken liver, night crawlers, shiners, and cut shad, on bottom with the peak bites happening after dusk. Sunfish: use small hooks or pin-mins baited with wax worms fished under a float SOUTHEAST OHIO Hocking River (Athens and Hocking counties) – Channel catfish: The Hockingport area is generally a great place to find catfish. Use cut baits and chicken livers. The river at White’s Mill in Athens is another popular hotspot. Parking for access is on West Union Street. Fish above the island on the north bank with live baits just off the bottom. Smallmouth bass: can also be found at White’s Mill and other areas throughout the river. Use soft craws, jigs with minnows, and a variety of artificial baits. When river levels are lower, you should be able to find fish concentrating in deeper pools. Wills Creek Reservoir (375 acres; Coshocton County) – Bluegill: Use worms fished below a bobber throughout the shoreline to reel in some of these popular fish. Channel catfish: Use cut baits, chicken livers, or night crawlers fished tight-line in the spillway area below the dam or the fishing pier. Saugeye: The hotspot to fish is usually just below the dam, especially during the high volume water releases. Try white or chartreuse jigs tipped with minnows. SOUTHWEST OHIO Great Miami River (Miami, Montgomery, and Warren counties) - Catfish: Popular spots on the river are the deeper water areas below the low head dams. Anglers can find fish lying in these deeper holes. Try using chicken livers, cut bait, earthworms, night crawlers, or live goldfish or bluegill for flatheads. Smallmouth bass and rock bass: are being caught in the early morning and late evening hours in transition areas where deep and shallow water meet. Popular baits are soft crayfish and salted tube jigs. Remember to ask permission before entering private property. Paint Creek Lake (Highland and Ross counties) – Crappie: are hitting along banks and around downed trees. Anglers should fish with minnows or pumpkinseed jigs. Largemouth bass: Jig in about 4-to-10 feet of water. Bluegill: are hitting wax worms in the coves around wood.
