Big John WEATHER Summary & Discussion (Issued 3:00 pm Wednesday November 19th, 2014) You are a part of history. Not sure just how excited we should be about this… Savannah goes into the weather history books with a new record low for today’s date. We will experience more teeth-chattering with another cold night tonight before we start to moderate, 70s by the end of the weekend. And get ready for another rainmaker to start Thanksgiving Week. The core of this Arctic dome is sliding through the Great Lakes, high pressure reaching all the way down to the Gulf Coast. At last count, 38 states reported record cold this morning including our 26-degrees, beating the old 2008 record of 27. I’ll bet it was colder at your house. One unofficial thermometer in Lumber City recorded 17-degrees. And the cold made it all the way to the beaches officially ending the growing season for our entire area, actually three days before normal in town, but 21 days before normal on the islands. The National Weather Service will now halt issuance of frost/freeze advisories and warnings until March 1, 2015 when the growing season should resume. So, for now, the high is in charge with the more active storm track across the Northern Tier of States. And the high stays in charge allowing some insolation to actually warm us up very slowly: the colder starts, shorter days and low-sun angle not working very efficiently this time of year, so it will be a slow warm up for the rest of the work-week. Then, we do it again. As the high exits, the still-relatively-warm Gulf waters lift more energy into a new Gulf rainmaker. A new warm front will move northward out of the Gulf, pushing us up into the 70s with a grey wet day expected Sunday, even some thunderstorms. A new Canadian cold front will follow, passing late Monday, Tuesday drier in the 60s, Wednesday travel day in the 50s, and THANKSGIVING DAY dry in the low 60s from this distance. We’ll be watching, and writing more history!
